A Book Review of H Hood Evolution by Darrel Ray

The Hood Evolution is an intriguing new series on A&E’s reality series “HC.” In this show, which debuted last week, a controversial televangelist pastor from Atlanta Georgia, Pastor Gino Joins, fronted a program called Hood Talk. Pastor Gino is known for his controversial views on social issues, particularly the ones relating to gay and lesbian people. He is also infamous for his sermons in which he compares homosexuality to pedophilia, bestiality, and rape. In one sermon, he likened being Gay to being possessed by the devil.

But what many people do not know about Pastor Gino is that he is actually very good at what he does, as demonstrated by the millions of people who listen to him on his worldwide travels. Many people who listen to the program have come to admire him as a colorful personality and religious teacher. His charming personality is the key reason why so many people listen to his radio show each week. As well as his compelling religious teachings, he is also a skilled public speaker with a great sense of humor. With his famous radio-style speeches, many people who receive his famous radio shows throughout the world find themselves being drawn into the inspirational messages he shares. In one episode of H Hood Evolution, titled “evangelist and pastor community peen pastor,” the titular character, Pastor Gino, takes his message to a gathering of Hooded Christians in Atlanta, Georgia. While some of the attendees of the gathering are openly hostile to him and his ministry, others are impressed by him and his message. Through the course of the episode, it becomes apparent that despite the hostility from some of the attendees, Gino is an important part of the group and does more speaking than listening. Ultimately, the entire group grows to respect and trust him and are won over by his powerful message.

The inspiration for this story is a familiar one to those who have studied the world of religious communications and Christian fundamentalism. The story comes from a book of the same title written by the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Although I am not an expert on this topic, I have read the book several times and found it to be a worthwhile read.

In the words of Dr. Peale, “The only power God has placed in his creation is the power of love. Nothing else can dominate in the long run. Love alone can redeem mankind.” This is the underlying theme that runs through the book and every episode leading up to and including the final message of the final chapter.

H Hood Evolution has a steady beat and seems to be gaining momentum. The radio shows reach many people throughout the country and they include people of all ages, religions and ethnic backgrounds. The message is simple and timeless. It is time we did something about global warming and radical Islam. The time is now to wake up and smell the coffee.
